GMS Agritech Pvt Ltd, one of the leading seed manufacturers in Eastern India was promoted in the year 2001 by Sri Bapi Biswas and Jyotirmoy Guha, both Tecnocrats with Post Graduate degree in Agri-Engg from IIT, Kharagpur with an aim was to produce and supply good quality seeds for major Agricultural crops and also to develop better varieties.
To uplift the economy of the farming community by providing quality seeds through development of hybrid as well as high yielding biotic and abiotic stress resistance varieties. Acquire and apply latest technologies to enhance crop productivity. To pursue integration of world class technologies obtained from in -house research through collaborative programs in the field of genetics, plant breeding, biotechnology, seed science and other agricultural disciplines.
The company was promoted by Sri Bapi Biswas and Jyotirmoy Guha. Both the promoters are Graduates (B.Tech) and post Graduates (M.Tech) in Agricultural Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. It is predominantly a rice seed company with a strong research base, with its head quarters in Kolkata, West Bengal. Apart from rice seed, it is also involved in production and marketing of seeds of potato, Hybrid maize, oil seeds. Jute,wheat and vegetables. The average annual turnover of the company last financial year 2023-2024 was Rs 70Cr. The operational processing, storage and packaging are on a plot of 7.5 acres on the Panagarh, Moregram highway in village Uttorkona, under Illambazar P.S in Birbhum District of West Bengal and also on 3.5 acres at Chakturia Mouza, Kharagpur, West Midnapore West Bengal. Its research and development unit is at Bahiri Mouza, Near Bolpur, Birbhum, West Bengal.

Although the state released paddy varieties cater to a significant areas in Eastern India, still a wide agro- ecological area is left behind where farmers need better varieties to suit their growing needs. Accordingly the company has initiated an extensive varietal development program for open pollinated paddy varieties. Program for new Hybrid rice varieties through development of both new CMS and Restorer lines which may be suitable in the light of consumer preference of this zone. The company also has a well equipped rice quality testing laboratory to ensure development of rice varieties in line with consumer preference of different area. Collection of both indigenous as well as high yielding rice cultivars as well as land races and varieties which are otherwise preferred by the consumers of this state for various reasons or has special characters. Development of latest technologies (including Tissue Culture & Aeroponics) for production of small sized disease free early generation potato seed tubers which is the key to large scale potato seed production. Varietal Improvement programme on various Pulses & Oilseeds for developing a alternate soil healthy crop for the farmers
GMS Agritech Pvt. Ltd. undertakes seed production in over 6000 acres of land with about 5000 farmers in the states of West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Karnataka. The Company has a technically competent team of production managers and field officers with agriculture sciences background and having special training in Seed Technology. These officers are continuously monitoring the production fields to ensure that, only those seeds which meet the stringent quality parameters reach the processing center of the company. We are continuously arranging field oriented training of our field officers and Farmer Group-heads to impart the knowledge of the latest developments in the field of seed cultivation & technology to them. Hybrid rice & hybrid Maize seed production is mostly being done state of Talengana. Part of the hybrid rice seed production is being done West Bengal also. Potato tubers of various generations are being done directly by the company in Punjab.
The company has elaborate seed processing & conditioning facilities at Uttarkona, Birbhum, West Bengal for sunning, processing, treating, packing and storage of seeds. The details of facilities are as follows : Drying yard (30000 sqft), godown space (30500 sqft), controlled atmosphere store (CAS) or dehumidified cold chambers (9000 sqft), office cum guest house, staff accommodation, canteen etc. The seeds received from farmers are processed to achieve quality standards which surpass those prescribed by the regulatory authorities. In addition another seed processing plant exists at Chakturia, P.S: Kharagpur, Dist. Paschim Medinipur, WestBengal, India.
GMS Agritech Pvt. Ltd. has well equipped seed quality laboratory at Uttorkona, Birbhum, WB for quality control of all its seeds lots. All the seeds are checked for germination, physical and genetic purity, moisture content and vigor before packing and sending top marketing centers. The quality control department also does grow out test (GOT) to ensure that all the seed lots are of highest genetic purity.
The company is having a long sustained collaboration with International Rice Research Institute, Philippines on various aspects of rice research through their IRRI-India office Experts from IRRI are regularly visiting the research set up on several occasions to monitor the progress of such activities.
